NFL Hall of Fame Game - Thursday 8/4/22

Jaguars vs Raiders

Jaguars (+2) (-105)

The NFL Preseason is very hard to handicap. Unless you have some inside information, it can truly be a toss-up. While I do not have inside information, I do know that the highest correlation with preseason success is quarterback play. Both teams will be benching the majority of their starters for this game.

With no Trevor Lawrence or Derek Carr, this will come down to the backups. The Jaguars are a young team with a new head coach. These young guys will be looking to prove themselves right out of the gate. With C.J. Beathard injured as well, the Jaguars will be down to their 3rd and 4th string QBs. That is fine with me. Jake Luton will start the game and probably play the 1st Quarter. He has NFL experience and has been with the team for a few years. He should be comfortable out there. After that, it will be NFL Preseason practice superstar Kyle Sloter taking the snaps. While Sloter does not have NFL experience, he is a Preseason All-Star. In games he has played over the past 3 years, he has won 80% of his games with an amazing TD-INT ratio. Whether on the Broncos or the Vikings, he has SHOWED OUT.

Sloter does not have the arm talent / tools to be an NFL starter. It is what it is. But the kid is smart and an absolute gamer. In his preseason career, he is 10-1 in games he has played in. In those 11 games, he has a 120 QB Rating with a 75% completion percentage and has 11 TD's to 1 INT. Those are hero numbers.

As for the Raiders, they have two new quarterbacks and a new head coach. They have a lot of new pieces and with such an early game in the preseason, that does not boast confidence. They will be playing 3 quarterbacks. Jarret Stidham (Checkdown Charlie, Mr. Dink & Dunk), who is decent at best. Whether in preseason action or regular season games, he has shown he is nothing more than mediocre. Then there is Nick Mullens, the old San Fran backup QB. He is also decent, but was a product of his environment in San Fran. Then there is a no-name rookie who will more than likely be playing close to the enitre 2nd half.

Let's ride with Sloter and the Jags to the promise land in Game 1 of the NFL Season.

Football. Is. Back.
