For Hamilton +1.5, I’d grade it around a 7.5/10 confidence play.

Here’s why:

✅ Home opener in Hamilton — The Tiger-Cats are opening the CFL season at home, which is always worth something in a league where travel and crowd energy matter.  

✅ The spread is telling a story — Most books have Montreal favored by only 1.5 points. Oddsmakers are basically saying these teams are very even on a neutral field.  

✅ Hamilton’s offense returns key pieces — Bo Levi Mitchell and Kenny Lawler are back together, and Hamilton retained much of the offense that helped them finish atop the East Division last season.  

✅ Many CFL writers are on Hamilton — CFL.ca’s Week 1 panel had roughly 80% of its writers picking Hamilton to win outright.  

⚠️ Concerns:

  • Montreal has been one of the CFL’s most consistent organizations over the last several seasons.  

  • Davis Alexander looked excellent last year and Montreal has a strong defensive foundation.  

  • Week 1 can be unpredictable because teams haven’t shown much yet.

My numbers:

  • Hamilton +1.5: 7.5/10

  • Hamilton Moneyline: 6.5/10

  • Best score projection: Hamilton 27, Montreal 24

If I were using this as VIP Jimmy, I’d likely make Hamilton +1.5 the official play rather than the moneyline because that half-point protection could matter in what looks like a very tight opener.
