The Cubs head into tonight’s matchup against the Pirates at PNC Park with rookie right-hander Cade Horton (10-4, 2.70 ERA) on the mound, looking to continue his strong stretch and keep Chicago in the thick of the NL Wild Card race. Standing opposite him is Pittsburgh’s young ace Paul Skenes (10-9, 1.92 ERA, 203 K), one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball this season, but one who hasn’t always received run support from the Pirates’ lineup. The Cubs offense will need to stay patient, work deep counts, and capitalize on any mistakes Skenes makes, while Horton’s ability to limit hard contact and control innings could be the key to matching zeroes and giving Chicago’s bats a chance to strike late. With the playoff push intensifying, this game has all the makings of a tight pitcher’s duel where a timely hit or defensive miscue could decide it, and the Cubs have the edge if they can grind out quality at-bats and back Horton with solid defense.
