Padres (ML)
Their recent offensive consistency paired with a slight edge in the starting pitching matchup. San Diego sends out Nick Pivetta (13–5, 2.87 ERA), who has been locked in all season, showing excellent command and keeping hitters off balance with his mix of high-spin fastballs and a sharp breaking ball. San Diego’s lineup, led by Juan Soto, Fernando Tatís Jr., and Manny Machado, has been producing timely hits and putting pressure on opposing starters early, which could be the difference here if they can jump on before Chicago’s bullpen gets involved. Meanwhile, the Padres’ bullpen has quietly been one of the most dependable units in the NL, giving them a strong safety net if the game stays close late. Given the way Pivetta has been limiting runs and the Padres’ ability to capitalize on scoring chances, I see San Diego outlasting the Cubs in this spot, making the Padres ML the play.
