Clemson enters this game as a modest favorite, but there are several warning signs that Georgia Tech could make this a close one, or even pull off an upset. Clemson’s defense remains its strength, but their offense has been underwhelming through two games: lacking consistency, especially early in games, while committing enough mistakes that give opponents life. On the other side, Georgia Tech’s offense has shown explosiveness, both passing and rushing, and while their star quarterback Haynes King is nursing an injury, the backup (Aaron Philo) has looked competent when given the chance. Tech also has home field and the motivation: beating Clemson would signal that they belong in the upper tier of the ACC this year.
Given the spread, +3.5 gives Georgia Tech a buffer in what might be a tight, turnover-oriented game. If they can control the tempo (run game, limit big plays by Clemson, force Clemson into third-and-long), they have a good shot.
