Tigers vs. Royals Free Play

Our free MLB play for Thursday, July 23 comes from Detroit, where the Tigers host the Kansas City Royals.

The official play is Detroit Tigers -1.5 on the run line.

Detroit has the clear pitching advantage with Troy Melton on the mound. Melton enters 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP through 55 innings, while allowing only 33 hits. He has consistently limited traffic and given the Tigers a strong chance to control games from the start.

Kansas City counters with Randy Dobnak. His 1.93 ERA looks strong, but it comes across only 14 innings. Dobnak has a 1.50 WHIP, eight walks and seven strikeouts, which suggests he has been pitching around too many baserunners without missing many bats.

The full-season pitching numbers also favor Detroit. The Tigers carry approximately a 3.67 team ERA and 1.23 WHIP, compared with Kansas City at 4.94 and 1.45. Kansas City is also dealing with key injuries, including Bobby Witt Jr., which removes its most dangerous all-around hitter.

Rather than laying close to -200 on the Detroit moneyline, we are taking the run line near even money and backing the Tigers to win by at least two runs.
